The Foundation Programme provides systematic study, meditation and discussion on six essential Buddhist texts to deepen our understanding and experience of Buddha’s teachings.
“By studying on FP we naturally increase our Dharma wisdom and improve our ability to benefit others”
– Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
Systematic study each week is essential in developing and nurturing both our wisdom and compassion, which are necessary qualities leading to the lasting inner peace of a Buddha. By studying the essential Buddhist texts as presented by our Spiritual Guide, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, we can internalise Buddha’s teachings and develop the qualities that enable us to become a source of peace and happiness for others and we can then be of real benefit to our family and friends, our society and our world.
Foundation Programme – In-Depth Study of Kadampa Buddhism
Each session is led by Kadam Mike Garside, our resident teacher, and includes preliminary prayers, guided meditation, teachings and transmission of the text, with discussion and dedication to conclude each session.
If you wish to deepen your understanding and practice by joining the Foundation Programme, now is the perfect time to start. The New Eight Steps to Happiness is one of Geshe-la’s most accessible and immediately practical books, but it is also one of the most profound. A commentary to a beautiful eight verse poem written a thousand years ago by the great Tibetan Bodhisattva Langri Tangpa, New Eight Steps teaches us how to move from our ordinary closed and self-centred state of mind to the boundless love and compassion of an enlightened being. Loving everyone without exception is not an impossible ideal – by putting into practice the step by step instructions explained in this book we can use all our daily experiences to break through the shell of egotism and open our heart to others. The last part of the book consists of an extraordinarily clear explanation of a difficult topic – ultimate truth, or emptiness. For those who have already studied this topic, the revisions in this new version will stimulate some surprising new insights.
Enrolment on FP is on a ‘per text’ basis. It is possible to enrol at any time during the year and runs on Sundays from 9:00am to 1:00pm, including a tea break.
