“Eliminating the distractions of my mind completely,
Observing and holding a single object of meditation with mindfulness,
And preventing the obstacles of mental sinking and excitement from arising,
In this way I will control my mind with clear and joyful meditation”.

On Saturdays when there aren’t other courses, we have a day of meditation called Clear Stillness aimed specifically at improving our meditative concentration. To attain a state of perfect concentration, or tranquil abiding, we need to focus on just one object of meditation, gradually improving our ability to hold it singlepointedly. The sessions themselves are silent and are not guided, but the teacher can give you advice between sessions. People find meditating together in our blessed meditation hall very powerful and much easier than on their own in their homes. There are four 90 minute sessions a day starting at 7.30am, 10.30am, 4.30pm and 7.30pm. The sessions are divided into three mini sessions of about 25 minutes folllowed by a five minute silent break to stretch your body before resuming with the sitting meditation. You are welcome to come to any session you are able to – there is no need to attend all four – but please do not arrive late. There is no charge for the Clear Stillness retreats.
